Biography
Dr. Yusuf Shieba
Dr. Yusuf Shieba is a Lecturer and Consultant of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Qena University, Egypt. His work spans adult cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, and the surgical treatment of congenital heart disease in children, alongside an academic role in teaching and clinical research.
CLINICAL PRACTICE
His surgical practice covers coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair and replacement, surgery of the aorta including aneurysm and dissection, and general thoracic surgery of the lungs, pleura, mediastinum and chest wall. He also operates on congenital heart defects in children, including septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary valve stenosis and tetralogy of Fallot.
A particular interest is minimally invasive cardiac surgery — performing selected valve operations through small incisions between the ribs rather than by dividing the breastbone, where the patient's anatomy and condition make this the safer and more durable choice.
RESEARCH
Dr. Shieba's published research focuses on valve surgery and surgical outcomes. He is first author of randomised studies comparing minimally invasive and conventional mitral valve surgery, including a randomised clinical trial of thoracoscopic versus traditional mitral valve replacement and a randomised study of postoperative outcomes after minimally invasive mitral valve repair.
He has contributed to international multicentre work on prosthesis–patient mismatch after aortic valve replacement with sutureless and rapid-deployment valves, on long-term outcomes and haemocompatibility of ventricular assist devices, on the effect of pericardial closure on right ventricular function after cardiac surgery, and on sex-related differences in recovery and mortality after high-risk cardiac surgery.
His work has appeared in the Journal of the American Heart Association, Artificial Organs, Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, the Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease, the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, the Egyptian Journal of Bronchology, and the Journal of the Egyptian Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. He has also published thoracic surgical case reports on empyema necessitans in a child, life-threatening tracheal obstruction caused by nodular fasciitis, and traumatic diaphragmatic hernia.

TEACHING
Alongside his clinical and academic post, Dr. Shieba teaches practical skills that trainees are often expected to have but rarely taught systematically — structured interpretation of the chest X-ray and CT chest, and the fundamentals of designing, analysing and writing up medical research.
PATIENT EDUCATION
He writes and produces Arabic-language material explaining cardiac and thoracic conditions to patients and families in plain terms: when chest pain needs emergency assessment, what a hole in a child's heart actually means, how valve disease develops, and which risk factors genuinely change outcomes. This site collects that work as articles and videos.
